What Is Silver Diamine Fluoride?
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a liquid medication applied to the surface of a tooth to stop decay. The silver acts as an antimicrobial agent, while the fluoride strengthens the tooth structure. It’s an effective, non-invasive option for treating cavities in baby teeth — especially for young children or those with special healthcare needs.

Benefits of SDF Treatment
-
No drilling or anesthesia
-
Quick, painless application
-
Ideal for young or anxious children
-
Helps prevent the spread of decay
-
Useful for children not ready for traditional fillings

SDF is often recommended as part of a larger cavity management plan. It’s especially helpful when children are very young, nervous, or have difficulty sitting still for longer procedures.

What to Expect
SDF is brushed directly onto the decayed area of the tooth. The process is fast, taking just a few minutes, and doesn’t require any numbing or removal of tooth structure. After application, we may recommend follow-up visits to monitor progress and reapply if necessary.

Note: One important thing to know is that SDF permanently darkens the decayed area of the tooth. This black staining is a sign that the cavity has been successfully stopped, but it may be visible when the affected tooth is in the front of the mouth.

Is SDF Right for My Child?
SDF is ideal for:

Treating early cavities in baby teeth
-
Children who are anxious about dental visits
-
Kids with special needs or sensory sensitivities
-
Delaying more invasive treatment until a child is older

At Hello Kids Dentistry, we’ll help you decide whether SDF is the best option for your child based on their age, comfort level, and the extent of tooth decay.
